Baltimore Angels – 2013 A Year in Review

To Our Friends & Partners:

I am proud to say 2013 was an active year for the Baltimore Angels. We are closing on our 5th year, and have grown in a variety of ways. We have seen a growing number of investment applications (200+ this year alone), versus 700 in total since the groups inception. There is a lot of momentum building in the region and specifically here in Baltimore.

As part of our mission to support and improve the regional ecosystem, this year we were excited to launch the Angel Education Series, which focuses on connecting the public to the world of start-ups, entrepreneurial ideas and investment education. Our initial sessions were focused on a macro view of the early stage funding environment by our friend Paul Singh, followed by a detailed talk on convertible note financing by our friends at Miles & Stockbridge, and finally, group member Hugh Evans presented a talk on the impact that 3D Printing will have and what opportunities it will present. We are excited about continuing this series in 2014.

Most importantly, however, our members continue to invest in the region (just under $1M in 2013), and they continue to connect with passionate entrepreneurs to bring their ideas to fruitful execution. This year, the Baltimore Angel’s made investments in the following companies:

Reify Health
ZeroFOX (Riskive)
SurveySnap
Bespoke Post
Signal Vine
Allovue
Citelighter

We also spent time to focus on outreach and our group brand. We continued our sponsorship of the Baltimore Tech Breakfast, spoke at a number of events, and were active supporters of the InvestMaryland Challenge. We have also re-energized our social media presence via Twitter, Google+, and Facebook. We encourage you to connect with us on these channels as we will be very active in 2014.

All of this activity and effort is certainly not a single person effort. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our operations manager Sean McElroy, who has been with us since August and has done an amazing job with helping our group continue to build momentum and get to the next level. In addition, I’d like to thank Ed Chalfin, who has always stepped up to the plate and helped us move the chains forward on multiple fronts, including chairing our pre-screening committee. Aaron Helm, who was the group’s administrator (Dec 2012 – August 2013), was also super helpful in setting us up for success. And finally, to ALL of our group members who actively participated, sourced deals, and took a lead role, and our sponsor Miles & Stockbridge, thank you for all of your efforts and contributions to the group. We look forward to a productive and fruitful 2014.

On behalf of the Baltimore Angels, thank you for your support this year. With your help, we are eager to build on this strong momentum, and will be working for more great things in 2014.

Happy New Year!

Greg Cangialosi, Co-Founder and Managing Member

Baltimore Angels Rebooted: A Year in Review

For the Baltimore Angels, 2012 was an exciting year of growth and development as we sought to expand our footprint in the local community, increase our deal flow, and implement new planning measures and strategies in order to better serve the local start-up community. The following post is an overview of how we grew and what we accomplished in 2012, and what our plans are looking forward to 2013.

A New Plan for 2012

After running the Baltimore Angels Group for three years, Dave Troy decided to focus entirely on his current venture, 410 Labs. Greg Cangialosi of Betamore took over managing member duties in November 2011. In December 2011, the Baltimore Angels held a meeting to discuss how they could better serve the needs of the local start-up community, while also increasing the efficiency of the group’s operations.

The Plan in Action

Beginning in January 2012, we started to implement the December 2011 plan. We are happy to report that from January 2012 to December 2012 the group was more active, investing in more deals than in any other year of the group’s existence. In the previous three years combined, the Baltimore Angels had invested in six deals. From January 2012 to November 2012, we invested in eight deals and deployed more than $850,000 in capital. We also formed an LLC during this period in order to better manage the group’s activities.

In early 2012, we added a membership fee, allowing the group to hire administrative support and create a website.  We also created a regular monthly meeting schedule for 2012. Many of these meetings were sponsored by the greater Baltimore community including local universities and law firms.  The investment process was also more carefully structured. Members of the Baltimore Angels formed a pre-screening committee to review companies and select presenters at the monthly meetings. Over the course of 2012, twenty-seven companies made investment pitches at the group’s monthly meetings. In addition, in 2012 we secured assistance from TEDCO with due diligence and closing services, and the Miles & Stockbridge law firm provided pro bono legal services for many of the deals in which we invested.
